Abstract

The article examines the characteristic features of the organization of humanitarian aid as well as cultural and educational life for Ukrainian prisoners of war in camps in Germany by the Ukrainian Military and Sanitary Mission after the First World War. Special attention is paid to the period of late 1919–1920, in particular to the external and internal factors that influenced camp life and the effectiveness of the Military and Sanitary Mission. The article reveals the characteristics and methods of assistance to Ukrainian prisoners of war, as well as the ways of their organization and financing. The author analyzes the impact of military and political changes in events and anti-Ukrainian agitation on the worldview of Ukrainian POWs and the position of the Ukrainian Military and Sanitary Mission in difficult circumstances for Ukrainian statehood. The importance of the mission's cultural and educational activities to support compatriots in captivity and nurture national identity in the difficult circumstances of the camp society is determined.
